4 Things to Do at Turner Field Before It Closes

Back in November of 2013, Mayor Kasim Reed announced that the Braves Turner Field would be relocating 10 miles north of Atlanta. Although opinions of the new location of the stadium is polarizing depending on who you talk to, we can all agree that the move is the end of one era and the beginning of another for the Turner Field.

But before the new field opens, let’s take a look at some of the cool and fun things you can still do at and the old field’s location!

1. The Braves Hall of Fame

Step into a time machine and see all of the amazing artifacts and the historical collection of Braves memorabilia displayed at the The Ivan Allen Jr. Braves Museum & Hall of Fame. This educational and entertaining exhibit details the team through the years, starting with their beginnings in Boston, to Milwaukee and finally how they came to Atlanta.

Located in the northwest side at Turner Field at Aisle 134 and housing over 600 artifacts and photos, this museum and hall of fame will give you plenty to do before and after the games.

2. Monument Grove

While waiting to purchase your tickets, check out the statues in Monument Grove. Located outside of the ballpark within the gated area of the perimeter, Monument Grove features statues of Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro, Ty Cobb, as well as the six-foot high team baseballs originally used to celebrate the 2000 All Star Game.

Every Braves player with a retired number (plus Jackie Robinson) is honored with a large sculpture of the number fashioned after the font used during that player’s era. All the statues are a great homage to the Braves player who have come and gone and should definitely not be overlooked during your visit there (especially the Hank Aaron statue, as it’s been discussed that it will remain at the old location after the move).

3. Tour of Turner Field

There is no other way to get a last good look at the old location than by scheduling a tour around Turner Field. In these guided tours, which are accessible year-round, you’ll be able to stop by and see locations such as the Coca-Cola Sky Field, the Broadcast Booth, the Clubhouse (although unavailable when the team is in town for obvious reasons), the Dugout and so much more.

This tour is great for any newcomer wanting to see more than just the ball field and any diehard Braves fan who maybe just wants to take in all things Braves related. Check it out by stopping in at the museum and hall of fame to schedule a tour.

4. Concerts

If you are curious if the Turner Field does more than just have games in its gigantic field, wonder no more! The park also hosts concerts as well. If you haven’t already checked it out, plan to come see one of the many concerts being held at the field between games.

Since 1997, Turner Field has housed over 60,000 people for concents for The Dave Matthews Band, Metallica, Eminem, to name of few. Although the new stadium will most likely carry on this tradition, plan to see a concert where it all started by checking out upcoming concerts from Flo Rida and Tori Kelly! You can see the official concert calendar here.

Make sure you cement your memories of the former Turner Field location by enjoying all these wonderful things to do at the old Turner Field before they dim the lights.
